To be completely transparent up-front, which is something I always recommend agile leaders to be, this post contains shameless self-promotion of my agile leadership offerings.

One of the questions I often get is about how team leaders and middle managers can support individuals, teams and the organization as a whole during an agile transformation. Most of them are generally positive towards going agile, but they can quickly turn from supporters to skeptics if they are left standing on the platform as the agile transformation train roars through the organization landscape. While teams typically get plenty of training and coaching on how to do Scrum, Kanban, Nexus, etc., the middle managers seldom get the same kind of support.

My Ugilic colleague Kristian Haugaard introduced me to a metaphor we all know from flying; If there is a sudden drop in cabin pressure, adults must put on their oxygen masks, before they help kids put on theirs. I love this metaphor – it is so easy to understand, and I think it is very comparable to what should happen in organizations going agile. Middle managers should receive training and coaching early on to be able to support individuals and teams making the transition to agile ways of working.

As I announced in my 2018 Retrospective, one of my main focal points in 2019 is to help managers and leaders adopt an agile mindset and learn some practical tools to help their organizations succeed with agile. In addition to my current courses, workshops, and talks, I am therefore thrilled to announce, that I have joint forces with Ron Eringa to co-train the Scrum.org Professional Agile Leadership™ Essential (PAL-E) course on the 2-3. April 2019 in Copenhagen. The PAL-E course is a 2-day training/workshop that provides a foundation for the role that leaders play in creating the conditions for a successful Agile transformation. Combined with situational specific coaching, it is the oxygen mask leaders need to help their organization successfully adopt agile ways of working.

Ron co-created the PAL-E course with fellow steward Ryan Ripley. Together they are ultimately responsible for collecting input on the course materials, both those that exist and potential additions to be made, review that input with the community along with Ken Schwaber (co-creator of Scrum and founder of Scrum.org) and provide updates as required. Who should Attend?

PAL-E is for leaders who are involved in the adoption of agile in their organization. That includes managers who are responsible for one/more Scrum teams, managers or leaders who are responsible for developing people in the Scrum teams (HR/PMO managers), and senior executives who act as a sponsor for the agile transformation and want to know how to develop the leadership for the agile transformation.

Course Objectives

Leaders will understand how agility adds value to their organization and why their support in creating the proper culture is essential to success. They will be prepared to support and enable teams by providing guidance and removing impediments that are beyond the team’s ability to address:

  • A professional introduction to agile and connecting agility with what really matters to the success of your organization
  • Understand how leading with agile principles and values creates better outcomes and overcome many organizational challenges
  • Understand how to create a culture of engagement in continuous improvement & delivery, and an accountability model for the modern-day organization to sustain agility

Course Description

Professional Agile Leadership Essentials is a 2-day workshop to equip leaders and managers of agile teams along with their Product Owners and Scrum Masters to help their organizations change by providing participants with:

  • An overview of what “Agile” is and why organizations need it to thrive in a changing world
  • The means to identify the potential opportunities, challenges, and impacts of agile in terms of business value and why this is so important to the next generation organization
  • An understanding of techniques to support teams to sustain long-term agility including the role that leaders play, shifts in thinking, and the relationship between complexity and empiricism
  • Ways to continue the development of the people to help them grow and prosper in an agile way of working
  • Practical insights in how the role of an agile leader is different from a traditional Manager
  • Guidance on how to measure and guide agile product delivery

  • A book related to agile leadership
  • A notebook with printed illustrations of the flipcharts produced
  • After completion of the training: a code for an attempt to the PAL I -certification
